The Secret History of the WAR On CANCER Many cases of cancer cannot be prevented, but the vast majority of them, according to Dr. Davis, could be avoided entirely if we took a long, careful look at the way we live and made some vital changes. One out of every two men in America will get cancer during their lives, and one out of every three women; that’s a much higher percentage than ever before in the history of the world, and it cannot be accounted for by genetics, longer life spans, or advances in diagnosis or reporting. The high numbers are being caused by something environmental, which brings us to two very important conclusions: one, that we are doing this to ourselves, and two, that we have the power to change it. “What we work and play with has a lot more to do with whether we get cancer than with who our parents happen to be,” says Dr. Davis. She found startling evidence of this when studying adopted children - people born into one situation, but raised in another. “Cancer does run in families,” she says, “but for those who are adopted, the risk mirrors that of the families in which they grow up, not those into which they were born.” This and other studies point directly to environmental factors as the primary cause of cancer, such as the places we live, the foods we eat, the products we use, and the conditions we work in. As a vigilant defender of consumer safety, Dr. Davis holds personal care products to an especially high standard. “There are carcinogens and potential carcinogens in almost everything we use,” she says, “and most companies don’t even bother to look for safe alternatives. Applying products directly to your skin, like soaps, lotions, creams, and make-up, is one of the most efficient ways of putting chemicals into your body. If those products have bad chemicals, and most of them doo, then you are very efficiently filling your body with toxins, carcinogens, and more. I always urge people to be extremely careful in the products they purchase and use.” That’s why she was so surprised-and a little worried-when Trivani approached her about forming a professionally relationship. “I’m a consumer advocate, not a corporate advocate,” she says. “I hold personal care products to an incredibly strict standard, and I didn’t think there was any way Trivani’s product line could measure up. I was shocked and delighted to find that they have truly followed through with their Do No Harm Philosophy. Trivani has created products that are completely free of harmful and potentially harmful ingredients and interactions. With all of my expertise as an environmental oncologist, I am happy to endorse Trivani’s products”. In the end, Dr. Davis supports Trivani because the company shares her outlook on prevention: it is better to avoid dangers in the first place than to try to patch them up after.
